Yoga has been around in India for over 5000 years and interestingly enough was a practice for men only that was passed down from generation to generation. It is only in the last 100 years however that yoga has become accessible to women as it flowed into the West as different styles such as Ashtanga, Bikram and Iyengar, to name a few.
The word yoga means yoke or union. In the West, people are most familiar with yoga through the asanas that is poses or postures.
Yoga however is a whole of life system, representing a way to live, work, interact and care for community and self, widely known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Historically the philosophy, physiology and teachings of yoga stem from ancient Indian texts, the Vedas, Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, and the Yoga Sutras (which outlines the teachings of the Buddha), the Tantras and Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
